STR Business owners in Arizona are fortunate to have Bill 1350 which is a preemption allowing property owners to rent their properties. Many jurisdictions around the country are not so fortunate. It is imperative that owners in Arizona stay vigilant to maintain this right.
AZRT (Arizonans for Responsible Tourism) is helping to direct efforts that we feel are pertinent to maintain these rights in Arizona. With upcoming elections including a new governor, we’ve honed in on some critical areas of focus for AZRT members. To maintain our businesses for the long haul, please consider getting involved. See these two main areas of focus below. Stay tuned for further dates and details.
Governor candidate meet-and-greet events upcoming this summer and fall (hosted by Airbnb) to ensure we are creating a positive narrative for short-term rentals to encourage that these candidates maintain our right to rent should they be elected into office.
- Karrin Taylor Robson – (Rep Gov – May 4th – done and successful – thank you members!)
- Kari Lake (Rep Gov – TBD)
- Matt Salmon (Rep Gov – TBD)
- Katie Hobbs (Dem Gov – TBD)
Please note two pro-STR candidates we feel are worth noting:
- Jan Debauskas (STR supporter) is running for State Senate in Scottsdale against Senator Kavanaugh (Kavanaugh has introduced damaging bills in past years for STRs and would continue to do so if left in office). Not only does Jan Debauskas have a good chance of winning, this could change the game at the capitol next session in favor of STRs.
- Matt Gress is another STR supporter running for a State House seat for Paradise Valley (no other elected officials in P.V. have been STR supporters). Many Arizona city councils are keeping a close eye on Paradise Valley and may follow suit with harsh restrictions on STRs as PV has already been doing. Regardless of whether you operate in P.V., what happens in P.V. is critical for all of Arizona.
